The hike begins on the Camino Puente de Hierra, a dirt road that follows the course of the Río Vinalopó. You'll soon pass the remains of several historic watermills, including the Molino de Pavía and the Molino de la Caraseta. The latter was converted into a small hydroelectric power plant at the beginning of the 20th century, known as the Fábrica de la Luz. Along with old locks and canals, these ruins provide a clear picture of the historical use of water in this valley.
Further on, you'll reach two viewpoints. The first overlooks the reed beds and marshland of the Vinalopó Valley. From the second, you'll have a view of the Puente de los Cinco Ojos, which you'll visit later on. There's also a lovely picnic table there.
Before continuing towards the aqueduct, you'll make a short round-trip to the Mirador de la Cola del Pantano de Elx. You reach this point via a narrow path that cuts through the marsh to the opposite bank, followed by a short tunnel. From the viewpoint, you have a good view of the river valley and the reservoir, the Pantano de Elche. After returning to the original bank, continue the route through the Barranco de los Cinco Ojos (Cinco Ojos Barranco) towards the Puente de los Cinco Ojos (Cinco Ojos Bridge). This recently restored bridge consists of five pointed arches, constructed of compact bricks. Like the nearby aqueduct, it was built between 1785 and 1789 under the direction of José Gonzálvez de Coniedo. The purpose of this waterworks was to transport water from the Fuente de las Barrenas spring near Aspe to the city of Elche.
After crossing the bridge, climb out of the ravine and walk through the Upanel area. This section of the route passes through a striking geological landscape with reddish layers of clay, marl, and gypsum, which have been eroded into a network of ravines and dry riverbeds.
The final highlight of the hike is the Mirador de Los Algezares, where you have a broad and clear view of the entire nature reserve. From this viewpoint, you return to the starting point via the Camino de la Temerosa.
