Penya Negra

This walk on the southern slope of the Sierra de Crevillent passes through an arid environment with reddish rock formations from the Triassic period. Furthermore, the Peña Negra site is visited, which is linked to the ancient city of Herna. Information boards provide insight into this ancient Iberian settlement. Sierra de Crevillent.

The walk starts at the Els Pontets aqueduct, which was originally founded in Islamic times. After a short paved section you walk along the Rambla Del Castelar to an old stone quarry. The orange, ocher-colored rocks will certainly stand out here. Furthermore, you ascend steadily to the Archaeological site of Peña Negra, which is linked to the ancient city of Herna. Here you will find an old restored shepherd's hut. You will also come across several other excavations with information boards. The route takes a detour at the foot of El Castellà with beautiful views along the way. You descend back to the valley of the Rambla De Castelar via a fairly steep path to reach the starting point.
