POI 4 - Montaigle castle.
The ruins of the castle of Montaigle are located at the confluence of the Flavion and the Molignée. Traces of human presence have been found from at least 7000 BC. Between 250 and 400 AD, the 160 m high rock was a shelter for the Gallo-Roman population. Gilles de Berlaymont had a fortified residence built on this site. In 1298, it was sold to the Consecrated of Dampierre. His son and successor, the Consecrated of Namur, then became the owner. He had a castle built there in 1309. According to the legend of 'The Lady with the Bundle', the castle was besieged and the lord of the castle had to capitulate. The besiegers decided to hang him from the highest tower later that same evening. However, they accepted that the lady of the castle left the fortress and took her most precious possession with her. At the end of the day, she left the castle with a huge bundle on her back. The soldiers laughed at her. Unperturbed, she walks away from the enemy troops. Out of breath, she faints. Shepherds rescue her when a cry comes from the bundle. To their surprise, the Lord of Montaigle emerges from the bundle and is thus saved from a tragic end.
