Exploring Cabañeros National Park.

From the parking lot, you descend into the Arroyo de La Viñuela valley. This is one of the lushest areas of the park. Due to the stream, you'll find a dense Mediterranean forest here, much greener than the well-known plains ("rañas") of Cabañeros. After about 3 kilometers of walking, you'll pass through an impressive forest of Pyrenean oaks. Some of these trees are hundreds of years old and form a magnificent canopy, creating spectacular colors, especially in autumn. Further along the trail, you climb to a higher elevation via a firebreak. Here, you'll have a breathtaking panoramic view of the Raña, the vast grassland also known as the "Spanish Serengeti." With binoculars, you can often spot herds of deer grazing from here. The trail continues through a dense thicket of strawberry trees (madroños). In winter, they bear red fruit. You'll also walk through a beautiful forest of Portuguese oaks (quejigares), one of the best-preserved specimens in the region. In the sky, you might spot the Eurasian black vulture, Spanish imperial eagle, or griffon vulture soaring on the thermals.

POI 1 - Cabañeros National Park.

The "Spanish Serengeti" of Cabañeros is one of Spain's most important protected areas. The park is unique because of the combination of the sierra (vegetated mountains) and the raña (vast grasslands). It is precisely these plains that give the park its nickname, because the enormous herds of red deer grazing there are reminiscent of the African savanna. Experience the park by 4x4. Because large parts of the park are inaccessible on foot to protect the vulnerable wildlife, a 4x4 excursion is the best way to explore the heart of Cabañeros. Book your tour in advance (usually from Horcajo de los Montes or Retuerta del Bullaque), especially during the berrea (the autumn deer rut).
