Pays de Bitche.
The hike goes from the lake of Hanau through mixed forest to the smaller lake of Lieschbach. You continue along the lake towards the ruins of the castle of Falkenstein. The Château du Falkenstein is the impressive ruin of a medieval castle that is spectacularly situated on a pink sandstone rock. On the top floor you have a wide view over the forests of the Parc naturel régional des Vosges du Nord. From the castle you walk through the extensive forests to the special rocks of Erbsenfelsen. This elongated rock face of pink Buntsandstein was formed 245 million years ago. Erosion created steep towers, crevices and a striking natural arch. The site is a breeding ground for the peregrine falcon. For this reason, part of the area is often closed during the breeding season from January to August. The route continues through forest to the ruins of the castle of Waldeck. The Château de Waldeck was built at the end of the 13th century as a defence post against possible attacks from the Vallée de la Zinsel. The construction was initiated by the rulers of Lichtenberg and the Duchy of Lorraine. It is situated on a rocky ridge of pink Buntsandstein. From the keep you have an impressive view over the Pays de Bitche and the Erbsenthal valley. From the castle you walk through the hamlet of Waldeck and a little further the route goes through a beautiful green valley to the edge of Lake Hanau. Here you follow a beautiful forest path to the car park.
