The walk starts at the reception center of the Begijnenvijvers and you soon cross the Bolissenbeek. There is a watchtower along the edge of the Begijnenvijvers. Here you have a nice view of these fish farming ponds that were once dug by order of the sisters of the Agneten Monastery in Peer. Through forest with mainly coarse and Corsican pine you walk in the direction of a more open landscape with numerous wooded edges. You go in the direction of the source area of the Zwarte Beek. As with most Kempen streams, there is no real source to be found, rather a convergence of a number of ditches. Via a short way back and forth you can go to the bird watching hut at the Zwartwater fen. In the hut you have a nice view of this fen where you can spot many water birds. You go from Zwartwater to an area that is aptly called Achter't Zwart Water, here you pass specially sown fields for bees and birds. The next part of the route takes you through a mixed forest. You come out the forest at a bee hotel and the Schuilenswijer, this beautiful piece of nature is a hotspot for butterflies. For people who with a the dog, a detour is provided in the directions because dogs are not allowed in the Schuilenswijer. You cross the Bolissenbeek and go through forest to the verge of the old railway line Hasselt - Achel. You follow a dirt road next to the arboretum. You walk through an open landscape to the parking lot on Diestersedijk. Here is an off-leash zone for dogs. It continues along a project for small-scale agriculture and then follows a winding forest path straight through the Eekhoorntjes play forest. Through forest you walk back to the starting point.

POI 1 - Zwarte Beek valley.

In Hechtel-Eksel the Zwarte Beek originates in a low-lying meadow area. As with most Campine brooks, there is no real source to be found, rather a convergence of a number of ditches. Another source branch supplies water from Helchteren. The Bolissenbeek also develops nearby, but it does not drain the water to the Scheldt basin but to the Maas.
