Hike along the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie, a line where water was the defense weapon. The hike goes through De Steenwaard to the Werk aan de Groeneweg, via Werk aan de Korte Uitweg along a rampart with behind it a military road, the so-called Gedekte Gemeentesweg, to Fort Honswijk. After leaving Fort Honswijk, the walking tour continues through De Steenwaard and then crosses the river via the Liniepontje to Fort Everdingen or Werk aan het Spoel. After a visit to defense works, the walking tour goes through the Goilberdingerwaard and the Baarsemwaard back to Culemborg.

Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie.
If the ferry is not sailing, an alternative path through the Steenwaard can be followed, the total length of the alternative is 19 km. Fort Honswijk is a tower fort, built between 1841 and 1848 to defend the north bank of the Lek and Fort Everdingen, also a tower fort, was built in the period of 1842 and 1845 to defend the south bank of the Lek. Almost 30 years later, in 1874, an inlet sluice, beer sluice and dam sluice were built for defense at Fort Everdingen. For centuries, Werk aan de Spoel was a place where water could be discharged into the Lek. In 1794, a dike post was built here, which was replaced in 1815 by a fort (‘work’) to defend the water lock constructed at the time. The Werk aan de Groeneweg was built between 1914 and 1918 to defend Fort Honswijk. The infantry position, Het Werk aan de Groeneweg, consists of a double trench with earthen walls and 55 group shelters.
