To the Altschloßfelsen

To the Altschloßfelsen
The highlight of this hike in the Palatinate Forest Biosphere Reserve is the magnificent Altschloßfelsen sandstone formation. Its name comes from a castle built on the rock hundreds of years ago, but which has long since fallen into disrepair. At approximately 1.5 km long, this rock massif is impressive with its bizarre shapes and breathtaking changing colors in daylight.

Palatinate Forest.
The hike leads from Eppenbrunn to the Eppenbrunnerbach stream nature reserve. You won't see much of the stream on the way there. You'll pass through a beautiful mixed forest along the Martelbach stream towards the Altschloßfelsen. The Altschlossfelsen is a stunning red rock formation. This 1,500-meter-long, jagged rock face is located on a hill known as Brechenberg. The name Altschlossfelsen means "rock of the old castle" in reference to the small castle that once stood there. After visiting the Altschloßfelsen, you'll continue towards the Hoher Felsen viewpoint, where you'll have a beautiful view of the valley and the village of Eppenbrunn. At the end of the route, you'll follow the course of the Stüdenbach stream back to the starting point.
