POI 1 - Holsteen.

The Holsteen is a collective name for 8 large sandstones. Scientific research shows that, under special circumstances, these silicon-containing sandstones originated locally from sea sand that was deposited here 15 million years ago. One stone shows grooves created by polishing prehistoric tools and weapons. Many old objects were also found in the immediate vicinity, including cutters, scrapers and arrowheads. The Holsteen is the only solid polishing stone in the Flemish country. He provides evidence that the area was visited by humans very early. A selection of the finds and information about the prehistoric past and the archaeological excavations of Zonhoven can be found in the visitor center Oud Gemeentehuis.
