A journey to the heart of the Sierra de la Demanda.
During the hike, you'll be amazed by the beauty of the landscape. The absolute focal point of the route is the glacial lakes themselves. The most famous are Laguna Larga and Laguna Negra. These deep, dark bodies of water nestle at the foot of vertical rock walls up to 200 meters high. In spring, they are fed by meltwater, while in summer, they exude a serene tranquility. Lower down the trail, you'll also pass the smaller, enchanting Laguna de la Cascada. Depending on the season, you can enjoy a magnificent waterfall at Laguna de la Cascada. The trail continues past a cave called La Cueva de los Potros, which is actually more of a natural hollow formed by stacked large stones. According to legend, this cave served as a refuge for the guerrilla fighter Jerónimo Merino Cob, better known as "El Cura Merino" (The Cure Merino). The hike takes you further to the upper edge of the spectacular glacial valley. From the ridges, you'll have a panoramic view of the bowl-shaped structure carved by glaciers thousands of years ago. This is the ideal spot to pause and absorb the sheer scale of the landscape. At the Mirador de Contadero and the highest point, Alto de la Campiña (2,049 m), you'll be rewarded with 360-degree views. On a clear day, you'll see not only the Sierra de la Demanda, but even the peaks of the Picos de Europa and the Sistema Ibérico in the distance.
