Tram line Maastricht-Vaals

Remains of the tram route can often be found in the landscape in this part of the tram line. Soon after leaving Margraten, the hike goes through a deep excavation, the slope of which is overgrown with trees and shrubs. Halfway through the excavation, the path suddenly climbs, in the days of the tramline there was a bridge there that was blown up by the Germans. That part of the excavation has been filled in, and various fragments of the bridge can still be found.

Gulperberg.

After the excavation, the route continues over a track body (bank). In this part, the walking tour goes through two tunnels in the track body, after which you look out over the Gulp valley with a 612-meter long bridge in the days of the tram line. After the tram line was discontinued, this bridge was demolished, if you look closely, the concrete foundations can still be recognized in the grassland. On the other side of the disappeared bridge, the track body is still clearly recognizable, the route ran south of Neubourg Castle. The walking tour follows part of the track body after which the castle Neubourg is visited. In Gulpen, the walking tour goes over the Tramweg street, which recalls the route, and past De Remise, the name of an apartment complex that now stands on the site of the tram depot and later bus depot. After a visit to Gulpen, the walking tour over the Gulperberg passes the Maria Monument, which the tram travelers will undoubtedly have seen during the journey. Back at the foot of the hill, the hike crosses the triangle of tracks. Here was a branch to Wijlre. In the past there were bridges across the Geul in this triangle of tracks, the abutments of one of the bridges are still present. From the triangle of tracks, the branch is followed to Wijlre, where the line connected to the current Miljoenenlijntje. In this part of the route, the track body is followed again with a tunnel for local farmers. The walking tour does not end at the former station visited in the next part. Other places of interest include four castles, Neubourg Castle, Cartils Castle Farm, Wijlre Castle and Wittem Castle. There are also two beautiful still working water mills, water mill Roex and water mill Otten.
