Through the Groene Woud.

What makes the Groene Woud special is its small-scale nature and therefore has a large variation in landscape, with poplars defining the image in this part of Het Groene Woud. Both along paths along the plots of the tree nurseries and in the four areas, poplars are found that form the backdrop landscape that dates back to the 12th century. The trees were once planted for the production of clogs and matches. Halfway through the 19th century, an important part of the Best population worked in the clog industry. Many clog makers disappeared in the 20th century, so that fewer poplars were planted. Yet the poplar is still abundantly present along the roads and paths and in the four areas that consist of alternating forests, groves, wooded banks, rows of trees and plots of grassland. In De Vleut near the neighborhood of the same name, a number of fields of pasture were redesigned in 2019, including a newly planted poplar meadow. A poplar meadow was often grazed by cattle with a pool as a drinking place. In the spring of 2017, Brabants Landschap brought back red deer in the fenced part of the Scheeken-Mortelen. The walk goes through the fenced part and with a bit of luck you can also see the red deer.
