The descent from the Ferme de Montaigle to the castle of Montaigle through the valley of the Flavion, is worthwhile. Along the Flavion you will discover several caves in the steep cliffs where hunter-gatherers lived in the stone age. You should not miss the castle ruins and the Montaigle museum. In addition, you get a magnificent view of the river landscape and the surrounding rocks at the castle. The way back to Falaën takes you past the hamlet of Le Marteau in the valley of the Molignée and the bare heights of La Héronnière.
This forest walk has some surprises in store. You will pass through the vast forests of Croix Scallie to the hamlet of Les Vieux-Moulins-de-Thilay, an important site for the resistance in WWII. In the middle of the forest you come to the last peat area of the western Ardennes, the Fagne De L'abîme. You can discover this special place via decking paths. At the end of the walk you can climb the 45 meter high Tour Du Millénaire watchtower, the view is truly phenomenal.
The limestone grass around the Roche Trouée and the Fondry des Chiens gives the sites an almost Provençal touch in the spring and summer. Sheep and goats that graze to maintain the lime grass reinforce the Mediterranean impression. With its limestone rocks and its rare heat-loving plants and animals, the region has a special biological and geological importance. From the heights and the western viewpoint you have a beautiful panorama of the surroundings.
